The Drug Abuse Resistance Education Program began in Grant County in the fall of 1991.  The program, which began with one officer, has expanded to three DARE Officers.  It is the objective of the program to educate elementary school children on the dangers of drugs, including alcohol and tobacco.  It is the hope of the program to teach the students the life skills needed to recognize and resist the social pressures that go along with these substances.  The program focuses on fifth and sixth grade children, and presently serves ten schools in six school districts.  The Sheriff's Department hopes to expand the program even further by starting a similar program in the area High Schools.
