Sheriff Govier was elected to his first term in the fall of 1996 and took office in January 1997. He began his law enforcement career in the United States Air Force where he was a security policeman. After his military experience he became a Police Officer for the City of Prairie du Chien for six years. Sheriff Govier left municipal policing to begin a career in retail security. For several years he worked for two different companies in Illinois and Ohio. In 1988 after returning to Southwest Wisconsin, where he grew up, Grant County hired him as a Deputy Sheriff. In 1991 Keith volunteered to be the first County D.A.R.E. officer and continued in that position until 1995.
